Handwerker, Susan

Although I have been known mostly for small ceramic figurative sculpture and assemblage my first love was painting.

Of course I paint on my ceramic work, but in recent years I have been moved to start painting again more intentionally.

I’ve maintained a strong connection to the natural environment in the Northwest, where I lived for some years and visit regularly. The magic of Vancouver Island, British Columbia compels me to interpret my experience in paint and this body of work has largely been created while immersed in the outdoors. This Vancouver Island series is still in progress and continues to expand in size and scope.

I studied ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking and fashion design in the United States and Canada. I live and work in Brooklyn, New York.
